Viscum capitellatum (Viscaceae) is an herbaceous growing shrub parasitic on Dendrophthoe falcata (Loranthaceae) which is itself parasitic on Mangifera indica (Anacardiaceae). Viscum capitellatum is distributed throughout the Western ghat region mostly in Kolhapur, in Uttar Karnataka and Tamilnadu. Genus Viscum comprising around 100 species, however, it is only Viscum album that has been investigated systematically. No such pharmacological and phytochemical data is available on the plant Viscum capitellatum. So, the main objective of the study is to investigate the unexploited angiospermic parasite plant, Viscum capitellatum for its ethnomedical claims as well as pharmacological activities based on chemotaxonomic tracing, in experimental animals. The dried methanol extract (VCM) of the whole plant of Viscum capitellatum Smith was studied for its analgesic activity grown on Dendrophthoe falcata (Loranthaceae). Analgesic activity was carried out using animal models i.e. Acetic acid Induced Writhing Test (Chemical Stimulation) and Heat conduction method in comparison with Diclofenac sodium as reference standard (Positive control). The VCM was given in doses of 100, 200 and 400 mg/kg body weight in which dose 400 mg/kg given significant results in comparison with reference standard Diclofenac sodium. The study may conclude that some chemical entities transferred from host Dendrophthoe falcata to the parasite Viscum capitellatum are responsible for analgesia....
Trachyspermum ammi is very famous spice of India and in many other countries. In the present paper, different aspects of Ajwain are discussed. In rural as well as urban areas it is not only used as a spice but also as indigenous herbal medicine to cure common ailments in human and domestic animals. Study area Kukshi tehsil of Dhar district of Madhya Pradesh is one of the backward regions with major population of Bhil and Bhilala local tribes. Nomadic habit of these tribes enriches them with the uses of local herbs as medicines to cure various ailments. Their herbal knowledge is infused into their next generation through vocal communication. Their knowledge which comes through their experience from the generators has to be properly documented. In present study it is shown that more than 60% of questioned people known its medicinal properties but most of the persons know it (about 80%) as a spice. It is not a common spice but is used with particular culinary preparation to subsidize the adverse effect, such as indigestion, cough formation and Rheumatism etc. caused by that particular vegetable. The present study is to educate the people about the magnificent medicinal properties of the Ajwain so its usage not only limited as a spice....
An ethnobotanical study was conducted from June 2010 to October 2011 to investigate the uses of medicinal plants by people of Pulwama distrct J & K. Information was gathered from many people about plants especially Mentha longifolia. it is used for different medicinal purposes. Due to its great medicinal value, it is over harvested. So it is, therefore, imperative to find ways to encourage practices while promoting conservation. Also it is hoped that phytochemical study and pharmacotherapeutics of this plant will provide much need lead for further research and new drug development....
The current study to investigate the antimicrobial potential of Pedalium murex L plant. Fresh plants with authentication were selected for antimicrobial assays. Extract of stem and stem bark was extracted in hexane by means of a Soxhlet device. It was then undertaken for determination of antimicrobial activity against bacteria such as Candida albicans, Staphylococus Aureus, Escherichia coli, K.pneumoniae, P.aeruginosa and B.subtilis. MIC was found to be 15mg/ml at this concentration stem bark extract showed remarkable antibacterial activity as compared to stem extract and their zone of inhibition compared with standard antibiotics. The bacterial strain of S. aureus and E. coli showed 17mm and 22mm zone of inhibition respectively that of ampicillin and streptomycin showed very less inhibition. Stem bark also sensitive to yeast fungus Candida albicans, reported a 16mm zone of inhibition, which was moderate as compared to fluconazole. Phytochemical screening of extract showed presence of steroid and triterpenes. Thus, the current investigation leads to fresh sources of new antimicrobials in future. This is the first report in vitro this revealed medicinal importance of ornamental plant Pedalium murex....
The immune system is an important regulator in the homeostatic mechanisms of the body, particularly during the stressful situations and ageing. The drugs acting on the immune system, i.e. immunomodulators are likely to influence many systems in the body. Many plants with potential immunomodulatory activity are reported. Carica papaya Linn commonly known as Pappita or Papaya is reported to possess anti-inflammatory, wound healing, anti-hepatotoxic, diuretic, and antihypertensive effect. It has been reported that Carica papaya is used in the treatment of Dengue infection. Hence, the present investigation was aimed to study the immunomodulatory activity of aqueous extract of leaves of Carica papaya Linn in order to justify the traditional claims using neutrophil adhesion test. In the present study, CPME and CPFE when orally administered, significantly increased the adhesion of neutrophils to nylon fibers which correlates to the process of margination of cells in blood vessels. The present investigation therefore reveals that CPME and CPFE certainly possess immunomodulatory property; however, further studies are warranted to elucidate the exact mechanism of action....
Several review and research studies documented that supplementation of pomegranate (Punica granatum) a species of family punicaceae, root, stem, seed, flower, leaf, fruit, extract shows multiple bioactivities such as antioxidant , anti-inflammatory, antidiabetic, anticancer, ,antimicrobials, and also shows protective effect as cardioprotective, gastroprotective, towards human health.Pomegranate has been used in various regions and folk or traditional medicinal system as a food supplement or a medicine because of its enormous compounds with lots of activity and without toxicity. This present study is designed to evvaluate the phytochemical and pharmacological profile of different extract of Punica granatum. The pomegranate an ancient and highly disdinctive plant for human society and to continue this it has been cultivated throughout the mediterranean region....
The antimicrobial activity of different extracts of the plant Barleria prionitis was evaluated by well diffusion method against E. aerogenes, E. coli, S. aureus, H. pylori C. albicans, T. asahii, A.fumigatus and A. flavus at different concentrations of 25µg, 50µg, 75µg and 100µg respectively. All the plant extracts showed inhibitory activity against all the organisms and the maximum zone of inhibition was obtained against S. aureus with the ethanol extract. Phytochemical screening of the plant revealed the presence of alkaloids, flavonoids, steroids, saponins, coumarin, tannin and lignin....
20 locally available plants of 13 families have been listed which are used by the tribal community of Pandhurna tehsil of Chhindwara district. Sillevani Valley is the main source of the herbal medicine. Gond tribe is the main inhabitants of the region, they live in or around the forest and depend upon biodiversity for their lovely-hood, and they hardly go to primary health care centre. Some of the tradition healers are very famous even many urban citizen came to meet them for the treatment of existing and dangerous disease but they never share about their herbal formulation, In the present paper some of these type of information have presented with the help of traditional healers....
